I agree with everything said here.

Due to Leo's unfunny jokes, his inability to stay focused, and is disrespectful attitude toward Paul, I find him more and more annoying. I'm actually considering cancelling my subscriptions to any of the Twit netcasts that are hosted by Leo. I can find more enjoyable ways to catch up on tech news.

My personal opinion is that Leo should just sit back and manage his company while letting qualified people host the shows.

I feel the same toward Sarah Lane. She is just about as annoying as Leo. iPad Today is virtually unwatchable because both Leo and Sarah co-host.

I agree 100% - the show was much improved when Tom was temporarily the host. But Leo is back.

I used to look forward to Windows Weekly, because it dealt mostly with Windows issues, and Microsoft in general. But it has deteriorated into something that has very little useful content, and almost none about Windows. It's no longer worth my time.

Leo is generally bored with, and often antagonistic toward most things Microsoft. This is reflected by his constantly directing the conversation towards anything but Windows. He is quite happy blathering on about Apple products, video games, Twitter/Facebook, juvenile humor, tech gossip - anything but Windows. In fact the only time he perks up when discussing Microsoft is when the news is negative. His immature mocking and giggling are very annoying.

I enjoy listening to Paul, but he allows Leo to interrupt and direct the discussion to the point where he can't get any coherent information across. Guess I'll just stick to reading his WinSuperSite blog.

The only TWIT netcasts I enjoy listening to are "This Week in Computing Hardware" (great technical expertise, focused discussion, no Leo) and "Security Now" (great technical expertise, and Steve Gibson is so passionate about his topic that Leo is lost in the background)

"There is a subset of the U.S. population who, when told by the government that doing something a particular way would be better for the entire U.S. as a whole, immediately resist. This includes such sensible things as fluoridated water, seatbelts, fuel-efficient vehicles, water-efficient toilets, vaccines, health care, and now—of all things—compact fluorescent lights."

No, there is a subset of the U.S. population who, when told by the government what they can and cannot purchase, decide to prepare for the future when the government dictates everything you can do. There, I fixed it for you.

You need to stop being so pompous. So what if I don't want to use your ugly, mercury-filled CFLs? Since when is it the government's job to tell me which light bulbs I'm allowed to buy? You need to take your collectivism back to Russia. Here in America, if someone wants to use an incandescent bulb, they use an incandescent bulb. If they don't want to wear a seat belt, they don't wear a seat belt. If they don't want to be vaccinated, they don't get vaccinated. If they want one mile per gallon, they buy a car that gets one mile per gallon. If someone doesn't want to purchase health insurance, they don't purchase health insurance. Do you see where this is going? (Hint: it involves personal freedom.)

If you want to use CFLs, be my guest. I want to use incandescents and you are in no position to look down your nose at me and tell me that I shouldn't. (I'd also like to inform you that you aren't "saving the earth". Global warming is a lie; sorry.)

I'm one of those stockpiling incandescent bulbs. What a shame when Americans have to stockpile light bulbs because the government says they will soon be illegal.

"But regular light bulbs are low-quality, obsolete products with short lifetimes and poor energy efficiency, and any simple analysis—apparently beyond the capabilities of some people—demonstrates that if you pay more up front, you’ll save more money in the long run."

Why do you care? I'll burn kerosene for light if I want. You seem to forget that Americans are not stupid. We know the benefits and limitations of both types of light bulbs and we use that information to make the best decision for us. You can use CFLs, fine. I can't stand them (for various reasons) and I refuse to use them. You will not make that decision for me.

Geez, I was cranky when I wrote this post. I was frustrated because I was trying to get to Nicholas Whyte's different posts about the Hugo winners he had read, and I wasn't succeeding.

As Nicholas Whyte comments, LiveJournal has been suffering from a DDoS attack lately. The attack was so severe that LiveJournal has extended paid time for subscribers by two weeks.

I use the WordPress blogging engine. I have been reading lately that the Slashdot effect can easily lock up a WordPress blog unless special optimizations such as cacheing have been enabled. So this site is even more vulnerable to becoming unresponsive than LiveJournal's is.

LiveJournal looks like an interesting place, and I'll want to comment on other posts I see there. I see that a few other blogging engines also request an OpenID for commenting. I have an OpenID somewhere, so I'll dig it out and start using it.

Thanks for the note, and also for flagging up Chad Orzel's blog piece which I'd missed.

I'm sorry about the limitations you found with reading and commenting to Livejournal. They had a pretty massive DDoS attack that week, which explains the first. I share your discomfort with both making and receiving anonymous comments.

Hello, Conrad. I was also searching to see if spam traffic affected my visitor stats. I haven't had a lot of traffic, but certainly a lot more traffic than spam comments (Akismet has only blocked 3 comments so far). Yet, yesterday, I had 74 views, but only 6 referring links. I suppose it's possible that the home page was viewed 58 times, but I'm guessing it's more likely due to web crawling.

I'll usually see something in my referral links like www.blog-wp.cc.co/blah-blah-blah-blah-blah/ or something to that effect. And it's gone the next day, vanished from my stats page. What the heck is that?

Thanks, your posting saved me MUCH time. LOL

Emil, I have no idea whether the traffic statistics recorded by WordPress include hits by comment spammers. I am seeing traffic increase on my blog, but I’m also seeing the amount of comment spam increasing, too.

Hi Conrad

I found your blog when I processed the text of a particular comment I had received in Google's search engine.

Well, I am experiencing what you describe above too.
However, I never understood how spam comments manage not to impact the traffic of a blog?
Do you have an idea?

Erika,

The great part of the pdf is that it's always up to date. My copy of the book, which arrived two days ago from amazon.com, is the fourth printing. The pdf is from the corrected fifth printing, and it contains tens of corrections to the fourth printing.

Thanks for the link.

Do you happen to have the .ipa file for this app? I've recently bought a new iPad and as you mention, unfortunately this has been pulled from the store :-(

Cheers

You can download the pdf of the book here.

It is one of my favourite books for this topic.

It's funny that it was only last month that you commented about the spelling of "RECIEVED". Only because today, I accidently put S3 in the DVD player instead of 2 and forced myself to watch it again and just noticed this error today, LOL.

Yay for Akismet! I swear, I get about 10 spam comments a day just saying "Thanks for that awesome posting. It saved MUCH time :-)", as well as all the others. It's so irritating. Akismet has caught them all though since I installed it - 617 in total - and it only marked one as spam that was genuine. The weirdest ones though are where people are actually quite rude, or trying to be controversial, yet are still blatantly spam. Very annoying though!

Hi,

or the easiest way is - if you have an old MySQL version (5.1) installed anywhere - you copy the 5.1 file 'mysql.server' to 5.5. It seems to me that they took a Linux version and not a Mac version. After coping everything works fine for me without setting any basedir etc.

Cheers,
